World University Netball Championship
Date: September 17-21
Venue: Kampala
Team USA, and six other countries have arrived for the World University Netball Championship.
The USA arrived in Kampala on Friday, hours after Singapore had set foot in Uganda.
USA finished last at the two earlier events, first in South Africa in 2012 then at the 2016 edition in Miami, Florida.
Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka were all expected to be in the country by Sunday.
Just after arriving in the country, USA captain Amara Mbionwu sounded confident ahead of the five-day event that starts on Monday (September 17) at Makerere University.
“We have been training since the year started and I believe we are more than ready to battle for the title this time,” Mbionwu stated.
However, Mbionwu’s side will need to work extremely hard if they are to bring their dreams to reality.
Hosts Uganda and defending champions South Africa are the tournament favourites.
“I think we have a very good team that is capable of claiming this title,” said Uganda’s skipper Irene Eyaru.
The President of the Republic of Uganda is expected to officially launch the championship on Monday during a colourful opening ceremony.
